REVIEW - Curren$y and DJ Fresh - The Encore
Aight, listen up, peeps! It’s ya boy Denzel, and we here for the lowdown on this new joint, "Encore," from DJ Fresh and Curren$y. Now look, last time these two dropped somethin’—whatever it was called, “The Not So Late Show with Elmo” or some mess—it was so weak, I don’t even remember the name. It bit "Road to Riches" hard, had whack lyrics, lazy flow, and just put me to sleep, straight-up. But hey, I’m back here with hopes they turned it around with this one. Let’s see if they came correct.
Just so we’re clear, all opinions here are mine, so don’t go takin’ it as gospel. I’m just keepin’ it 100, no trolls, no cap.
Here we go:
1. The Encore Intro – Aight, beat’s clean, and the bars… passable. My guy still slurrin’ like he had one too many drinks, but it’s cool for an intro. We off to a decent start.
Beats: 6/10
Lyrics: 9/10
Score: 15/20
2. Never Get Her Back ft. Preemo Rice – I’m feelin' that intro sample, clean as a whistle. Reminds me of somethin’ off "DAMN", for real. His mind does wander every other bar, but production is on point. Preemo comes through with a nice flow, but he runs that rhyme scheme into the ground. This one’s a banger thanks to the sample, not the bars.
Beats: 8/10
Lyrics: 7/10
Score: 15/20
3. The Vapors – Aight, heard this beat recycled on the last joint. That Biz sample’s tight, but the flow is average. Song just up an' STOPPED at two minutes like, "wait, that’s it?” Left me hangin'—wack.
Beats: 7/10
Lyrics: 6/10
Score: 13/20
4. Top of the Morning – Bruh, this mumblin’ is killin' me. Sounds like he’s sleepin’ off a blunt from the night before. Flow’s sloppy like a wino tryin’ to spit bars, and it’s makin' me cringe.
Beats: 7/10
Lyrics: 5/10
Score: 12/20
5. If I Ever Take You Home – I’m diggin' the beat, though he’s still named the track after the first line, lazy. Flow’s tight here, Worthy actually comes in strong and outshines Curren$y. That Rob Ayers sample hits the spot, at least I think that's who the cat sampled on the joint was.
Beats: 8/10
Lyrics: 6/10
Score: 14/20
6. Clever Captions – The beat’s hypnotic, I’ll give it that. But this guy’s flow is hurtin’, sounds like a frog with a 40 in hand. That Rakim throwback sample saved the track, but Smoke DZA lit up the second verse and left Curren$y in the dust.
Beats: 8/10
Lyrics: 6/10
Score: 14/20
7. The NSX – Beats alone could carry this album. Son got three settings: straight-up wack, mid, and try-hard. Well, Curren$y is in “try-hard” mode here; the hook’s aight, but it’s another short one leavin’ you wantin’ more.
Beats: 8/10
Lyrics: 7/10
Score: 15/20
8. Next Ex List – Son, what is this? Rappin’ is weak again. DJ Fresh laced it, and I love the Guru sample, but even that can’t save this disaster. Ain’t no one gonna miss this track.
Beats: 7/10
Lyrics: 5/10
Score: 12/20
9. New Devils – Intro mix slaps, and the beat got me noddin’. Curren$y tryin’ harder, but it just… ends. Kinda left me wonderin’, like, "Where’s the rest?”
Beats: 7/10
Lyrics: 4/10
Score: 11/20
10. Thaw Me Out – Aight, Fendi P comes thru, lyrics got some punch, but that voice? Sounds like a screechin’ Eastern Whooping pigeon tryin’ to lay down bars. The king don't even be knowin' what kinda bird that is, but that's what I was thinkin'.
Beats: 6/10
Lyrics: 5/10
Score: 11/20
11. The Ride Out – Smooth beat, but no ratings here; good for catchin’ Zs if that’s what you lookin’ for.
Final Verdict: 132/200 - 66%
This joint? Meh. Just "okay". Beats carry it, DJ Fresh holdin’ down the fort, but Curren$y’s like a frog in the middle of the danged matin' season, croakin' ribbit, ribbit, ribbit through half the album. Yeah, I’ll pass on buyin’ this, but if Fresh dropped a beat tape, I’m coppin’ that for real.
